UK Film Grants: United Kingdom Film Funding

If you live in the UK, you’re lucky. The British Government is incredibly supportive of their film and television industry. There are many sources available to help you finance your films, documentaries, shorts and creative videos in the United Kingdom.

The list below, although not comprehensive, will nevertheless point in you in the right direction and help you get started with your film financing research.

UK Film Council

The UK Film Council has multiple funding initiatives and is undoubtedly the biggest financer of productions in the UK with approximately 38 million Pounds yearly from the National Lottery. There is the development fund, which seeks to help and encourage writers, producers and directors. They even offer a “First Feature” fund which aims to help aspiring filmmakers fund their first feature film.

The “Premier Fund” seeks to help support the creative ambitions of successful filmmakers working on film concepts that have a wide audience appeal and commercial potential.

The “New Cinema Fund” helps encourage creative filmmaking in a wide array of genres. This fund helps support ethnic minority filmmakers and innovative and original content.

Lastly, the “Prints and Advertising Fund” provides funding to “speciality” films that are challenging to market but nevertheless have commercial merit and substantial audience appeal. These are often commercial films that have a British focus.

Channel 4 Britdoc Foundation

The Channel 4 Britdoc Foundation offers documentary financing to British documentary filmmakers. They offer small development grants to help filmmakers create trailers to help attract further funding. They also offer to fully fund documentary projects with small budgets of 60,000 PNDS or less. They may also provide completion funding based on a series of film requirements.

Scottish Screen

Scottish Screen is the main player in getting films financed and made in Scotland. They provide funds for development, script writing, feature film production, documentary production and short film production to name only a few.

Northern Ireland Screen

The Northern Ireland Screen has less than 1 million pounds in Lottery Funds, but they do provide partial funding for development, production and distribution.

Film London

A smaller, more creative funding agency that helps filmmakers fund both feature films and short films.

They offer a “Microwave” fund which encourages filmmakers to find ways to fund a micro-budget film of 100,000 Pounds or less.

They also offer a fund called “Pulse / Digital Nation” which is a fund that encourages new filmmakers to create short digital films for exhibition.
