Free Screenwriting Software

As many independent filmmakers know, acquiring the software to create your films can be an expensive endeavor. Pro versions of Adobe and Final cut cost between $700 and $1200. Then there are the after effects programs, DVD authoring programs, and script writing programs.

The most popular screenwriting programs cost roughly $200 – $300. However, there is a great free software program for screenwriters called Celtx. This software helps you format your script with industry standard formatting. Now you can focus on your dialogue, action scenes and script notes without having to worry about what margins to use.

Many screenwriters use Microsoft Word to format their scripts. However, this program is not intuitive to screenplays and although it’s possible, it requires learning on setting up tabs and proper script formatting. Not only that, but it wasn’t made exclusively for screenplays.

Celtx on the other hand allows you not only to format your script, but it also allows you to create and develop character personalities, storyboard, create index cards and quickly associate media and side-notes into your script. It’s also great because there are comprehensive search features in the program which makes finding specific parts within your screenplay very easy.

The program is completely free and we highly recommend it. There are a few bugs we’ve noticed, but they seem to be very minor in nature. We highly recommend this script writing software.
