Canada Film Grants and Funding Sources
There is a lot of opportunity in Canada to get film funding and grants for your feature films, documentaries and short films
There is no 1 right way to apply for funding in Canada. While Ontario and British Columbia are the two biggest entertainment centers, there are opportunities in all of the Provinces for funding that help filmmakers get their scripts developed, the film (or television series) shot, and even money for post production and marketing.
Below is a list of Canadian funding and grant organizations that help fund and support new and emerging as well as seasoned filmmakers get their films funded and made.
Telefilm has a feature film fund, a television fund as well as a new media fund. They also have other funds, but these are the three most common. You can visit their website to download the guidelines for development, production and marketing.
Telefilm is great because they are also very supportive of emerging artists.
The Canada Council for the Arts supports many artistic undertakings in Canada. They help fund everything from dance to theatre and virtually any other artistic endeavour that Canadian talent can conceptualize. However, they also have a film and video component to their organization. They provide research / creation grants, scriptwriting grants and production grants for filmmakers.
Like Telefilm, the Canada Council for the Arts also strongly supports emerging artists. They also place a high priority on innovation and artistic expression.
BravoFact is an organization to assist Canadian talent. They help provide funding for filmmakers who are working on short films. BravoFact will help fund no more than 50% of the total cost of your productions budget to a maximum of $25,000. They do not fund documentaries.
Again Bravo Fact has stated the importance of helping to support emerging artists in Canada.
The Canadian Television Fund (CTF)
The Canadian Television Fund (CTF) provides development funding for both English and French television series.
As a general rule of thumb, when applying for funding from any of the sources listed above it’s best to apply during the beginning of their fiscal year. This is when they have the most money available to them. It’s also helpful to apply at the end of their fiscal year. If they have any funds left over they will need to spend it on productions or the organization runs the risk of not receiving the funding from the government the year after.
Best of luck with your film funding efforts!
