Best YouTube Short Film
Over the last couple of months I have been scouring YouTube to find the best short films. Many of their most popular short films I’m not very fond of. I have spent countless hours wasting my time watching poorly produced and visually just not all that pleasing films.
However, I did come across this one European short film which is absolutely breathtaking. It’s a YouTube favorite but I think you’ll really enjoy this film. Keep in mind that with the exception of the beginning and ending (when the tourist in Paris) the whole thing is done in one shot. Look at the complexity of the set design, character involvement and the obvious camera difficulties that they would encounter capturing a short film this way.
Not only do they fit a very interesting story within a 10 minute time frame, but the cinematography is stunning. Some of the best short film cinematography I’ve even seen. Very powerful, very beautiful and very natural.
The acting in this short film is also fantastic. Short films have the very difficult task to make you feel for characters within a very short time frame. In feature films this process of creating a sincere connection between your protagonist and your audience doesn’t have to happen so quickly and you’re giving the freedom of time to develop this relationship. However, I find in short films the filmmaker usually fails to develop their character quick enough leaving the audience with a very minuscule emotional attachment to the main character(s) if any at all.
My only critique of the film is that I’m not particularly fond of the beginning and ending (in Paris). I thin it does a good job of setting the stage for the interesting concept of “time” but I think I would have preferred more serious or believable characters to help smoothly transition into the next sequence of shooting. But then again, it was obviously the contrast (between European countries) that the filmmaker was going for.
I’d love to know what your responses to this film are.
In my opinion: The best YouTube short film
