How to Create Subplots

Using subplots to create dimension in your films.

Subplots are often the part of the script that writers have the most difficult time incorporating. However, you need to pay special attention to subplots since they provide your story with depth and a sense of dimension. At this point you may not be that clear about what a subplot is so allow us to make it a little more clear for you.

The most common subplot is usually a love story. Therefore let's make up a superhero. We'll call him Iron George. Iron George is in a script where he has one main objective. That objective is to save the world from an alien missile attack which would ruin our world. This is the main plot or what is commonly referred to as "Plot A".

Plot A = Iron George will overcome many obstacles to save the world from being blow up by an alien missile attack.

As you can see, if there is only 1 plot it will be what critics like to call "Flat" or "1 dimensional". Imagine how the story would look if the only purpose of Iron George was to save the world from an attack. It would look something like this. Iron George would need to convince people we were under attack, he would face obstacles in getting people to believe him. The evil villains would try to shut him up by killing him, but instead Iron George would kill them. Iron George would finally convince the government that the world was under attack. The government would use the superpowers of Iron George to stop the missile attack in mid air. Iron George would succeed at his mission and it would be all over. Credit would roll. The audience would leave. The story would get poor reviews in the newspaper the next day.
