Sound & Filmmaking: Sample Rate

Learn about sample rates and why they are important for your films and documentaries

Sample Rate

Sample rate is the measure of how often we measure an audio signal. It has been proven that the sample rate must be at least double the frequency that we hope to capture. Because humans can hear sounds up to 20,000 Hz we need to be able to sample at least 40,000 times a second (40 kHz).

Different recording devices record at differ sample rates. If the audio device records at too low a sample rate it will result in “aliasing” with poor quality high frequency sounds.

CDs have a sample rate of 44.1 kHz. Many video recorders use sample rates of about 48 kHz. However, there are even high quality devices which use higher sample rates such as 96 kHz or 192 kHz.
