Filmmaking: Re-Establishing Shot

Re-using lines of action

How to re-establish your shot after changing the line of action

If you do change your line of action, theoretically you could place a camera on the new line of action to capture the facial expressions of the third character. However after this point, you might want to re-use your old line of action.

You can re-use your old line of action without any hesitation. This is called a “re-establishing shot” and because the audience is now aware of the space and the players, you can re-use old established lines to shoot some characters if you see fit. You can also move your camera back on that action line without using a pivot shot since the audience is already aware of all of the actors´ positions.

If an actor changes their line of sight

Even if a third actor doesn’t enter the scene but one of the two original actors changes position, you may need to change your line of action. If the actor changes their line of sight with another actor it may be necessary to change the line of action.

Now what would happen if the actor stood up and changed their line of sight by 90 degrees? In this case, you’ll want to change the line of action to correspond to this change. Using a pivot shot, you could quickly change your line of action.
