Filmmakers & Their Sound: Microphone Types

Different types of filmmaking microphones

Microphone types

Every microphone has a unique pickup pattern. They will all interpret and help record sound slightly different. One of the biggest considerations to make when looking at microphones is directionality which dictates which areas of the microphone are sensitive to sound and how wide or narrow their range is.

Choosing a microphone based on directional sensitivity

Omnidemensional: (Sometimes called “omni mics”) respond equally to sound coming from all directions.

Cardoid microphones: These microphones are very common and widely used in film production. These mics are most sensitive to sound in front of the mic, slightly sensitive to sound on the sides and least sensitive to noise originating in the background.

Hyper cardoid: These microphones have even greater capacity to limit sounds originating from the sides or behind the microphone. They are great for isolating sound in front of the camera. Hyper cardoids are more commonly referred to as “in-line, shot gun or mini shotgun”.

Super cardoid: These microphones are the best at isolating the sound from one particular spot in front of the microphone. They are often called “long tube shotguns” or just “shotguns”.
