Film Sets: Positioning the Microphone

How and where to position the microphone on your film subjects

When positioning a microphone you have many options, however one of the optimal placements for a microphone is about 1 - 3 feet away from the sound source with the microphone slightly above or below the sound. The reason it helps to put the microphone above or below the sound source (rather than directly in front) is because it helps eliminate certain sound irregularities such as the inevitable “popping” of certain words.

If a directional microphone is too close to the subject speaking, it could result in an artificially bass-tilted sound. This is called the proximity effect and it’s something you’ll need to be aware of if you’re going to be using directional microphones. However, if you’re too far away, the microphone will pick up ambient noise and it will mean that the speaker and the ambient noise are going to compete to be properly composed through the microphone.
