Filmmaking: Line of Sight

Common mistakes made with using inaccurate line of sight

If you're shooting a scene where you've established two characters looking at one another, or a character looking at a particular object, be especially aware of their “line of sight”. We will speak further about the line of sight in a future lecture but it's worth mentioning now so that you can keep an eye out for it.

For instance, if you're using one camera and you set your shot up to use an establishing shot to show the placement of two characters at a table. You then move the camera to capture the next bit of dialogue and you try to capture it from one of the characters perspectives. You need to ensure that the line of sight stays true. The audience will be able to see and feel some type of inconsistency with the look of the character. It will seem just “slightly off”. If you're using just one camera in your production this will be of particular importance in all scenes. For example, look at the continuity error in the example below. We've slightly exaggerated this shot to help make a point, but even subtle line of sight inconsistencies can lead to problems. Notice how in “shot A” we see the women standing directly in front of the man. ¨Shot B¨ is a medium close-up of the same man, however it shows him talking to her as if she was located slightly to his left. This inconsistency between shots is called a continuity error.
