Lavalier Microphones (lavs)

Getting audio as close to your subject as possible

Microphones that are clipped or otherwise placed on a subject's clothing are called lavalier mics (or just lavs). They are often used with a wireless transmitter and are great tools for helping get audio from a subject. They are usually intended to be optimized for the human speaking voice and because of their close range they can often do a great job of isolating the sound of the subject speaking. They are often used in documentary films but can also have a place in fiction films. With lavalier microphones the filmmakers don’t need to compromise camera angles because of problems with shadows from fish-poles or boom mics.
