How to Fix Room Tone & Ambient Noise Mistakes.

Learn how to fix your audio mistakes

There may be cases where an ambient sound snuck its way into your footage without you knowing it. For example, if the sound of a truck was in one shot but not the next, it will display an error in continuity to your viewers. However, instead of re-shooting or getting rid of the footage, you can look for sound effects to help incorporate this sound into your mix.

You should look for similar truck sounds in sound effect libraries and in your first shot introduce the sound of a truck approaching the scene. Then as the shot changes, the sound of the truck in the background will not be so obviously discontinuous. In the next scene, you could include an audio sample of the sound of the truck as it drives away. This creates a sense of continuity and allows you to use your footage with ambient noise errors.

Other repair methods

If you’re shooting a documentary, there will be some circumstances when you simply can’t alter your sound environment. If you’re doing a documentary in a shipyard, you may be surrounded by transportation trucks, boat horns and a host of other obnoxious sounds. The audience will be annoyed by most of these sounds if they can’t figure out where they are coming from or what their purpose is. Therefore, if your set is noisy, simply capture 5 – 10 seconds of each thing which is contributing the noise. You can use this footage to show your viewers the source of the sound which will allow them to be a little more forgiving while they listen to your audio.
