Sound & Filmmaking: Equalizers

How to properly use equalizers to enhance the sound of your film

Equalizers are sometimes found on sound recording devices and can be edited during production or they can be found in Non Linear Editing Systems (NLE) in post production. Editing low frequencies can make deep noises even deeper. For example, the sound of a low grumbling noise such as an engine can be exaggerated by editing the low frequencies. Alternatively, you can increase high frequencies to make high frequencies such as the sound of a violin sound ‘brighter”.

To achieve an audio effect similar to the sound of putting ear plugs in would be to lower the higher frequencies without changing the bass. The sound will then become slightly muted and dull.

To achieve the audio effect of someone speaking on the other end of a telephone you need to turn down both the high and low frequencies and possibly boost the mid frequencies.

As you’ll learn in the upcoming sections, the human voice occupies these mid ranges. Telephones have a narrow frequency response (mid range) allowing you to mimic the sound in your post production by altering the high and low frequencies accordingly.
