Video Editing Software (PC)

What are the best video editing software choices?

Below we outline the best video editing software programs for both PC and MAC computers. While most video editing software programs do the same thing some of them provide more freedom when it comes to manual controls. While you will usually pay a premium for these advanced controls they are also some of the most important features for editing films.

Best video editing software for PC's

Free PC Video Editing Software - Windows Movie Maker

If you have recently purchased a PC with windows installed then your machine probably came equipped with Windows Movie Maker. This little piece of software is a great tool for beginners. However, it's extremely limited in terms of editing video and sound. While many features do exist (such as filters and effects) they are pretty unprofessional looking or lack control. For example, while you can fade in and out music and video you can't choose when the fade in / out starts or starts. You also have no color manipulation tools at your disposal. For a free video editing software it's great, but if you want to have more manual control of your editing then consider one of the following PC editing software programs.

Ulead Video Studio - $90 - $130

Ulead is great for those of you who don't want to spend a bundle on your PC editing software program. Ulead is much better than Windows Movie Maker as it provides more advanced features such as more sound and video manual controls. However, they cater to the beginner filmmaker market and therefore keep their interface clean and minimal and keep the users options scaled back for the purpose of simplicity. Ulead is 100% better than Windows Movie Maker and it works on most machines, however, it's not as advanced as the next video editing software program we're going to introduce.

Adobe Premier video editing program - $530 - $799

This is one of the best video editing software programs for PC's. It is still fairly easy to use (especially for those of you with experience with adobe products such as Photoshop), but it has much more manual control for advanced editing techniques. You have full control of color manipulation, it's HDV compatible, you have full manual control over video speed (in percentages), and you can alter the fade in / out points at exactly the point you want. It's worth the price and your films which look much more professional being edited with Adobe Premier. Just one word of caution... Make sure your system is compatible with running this software. Adobe premier requires more system resources so older computers may not be compatible with it.
