Learn about dynamic range and its importance as it relates to film

For any sound, be it music, ambient noise or dialogue, the difference between the loudest part of the sound and the quietest sound is called the “dynamic range”.

Tape noise is always present in analog recordings and it determines the lower limit of the dynamic range (noise floor). Many independent filmmakers dislike this “hissing” or extra noise they hear when they playback their footage. This noise is often immediately attributed to low budget productions. However, as we’ll soon teach you, this noise can be limited while recording and reduced or eliminated in post production.
