Using a dolly is a great way to help add some neat cinematic effects to your scenes. It is also a widely used tool in Hollywood features and an underused tool in independent films so audiences perceive films that use dollies as being of higher production value. They can costs thousands of dollars but you can often find great deals for $70 - $300. Alternatively, for certain scenes you may be able to make your own dolly with any type of push devise on wheels (obviously the quieter and the steadier the better). Homemade dollies can cost as little as $10 or $20.

Dolly / Zoom

Another time you may want to use your camera’s zoom is when you’re dollying. It can create a very interesting effect to zoom out while dollying in or alternatively, to dolly your camera out while zooming in. It will have an impact on the relative closeness of foreground to background.
