Filmmaking: Using the Eyes

Using the eyes as an edit point in film

Directors love close-up shots because they are relatively easy to fit into any shot sequence and as we stated earlier, they give the audience access to the actors eyes. The eyes play an important role in filmmaking because they provide the editor with great "cutting points". As you'll learn in your upcoming lesson on staging, continuity and editing, you'll need to shoot film and edit film based on optimal "edit points". We go into much more detail on these "edit points" in future lectures. For now just know that the eyes act as great "edit points". This is why Hollywood is obsessed with various eye techniques such as close-ups where the actor:

Winks
Looks towards a particular area
Looks towards another actor
Cries
Blinks
Closes their eyes
Opens their eyes
Stares
Squints
Glares

All of these "eye actions" help provide the editor and film director with "cutting points" which allow the camera angle to change as seamlessly as possible.

We've probably all seen amateur films on video sharing sites that simply look terrible because their shot transitions don't seem to "fit" together. This is because they haven't found the proper "cut points". Again, we'll speak about these cutting points in a future lecture. For now, just know that the eyes play a big role in your ability to merge shots together to create a continuous, harmonious film flow.
